Paparazzi swarm new mum Naomi Watts

Police were called to a Los Angeles supermarket today after paparazzi
swarmed new mum, Naomi Watts, as she shopped for groceries.

Fearing for Watts' and other shoppers' safety, two LAPD officers ordered
more than 30 paparazzi to leave the Whole Foods organic supermarket and
its car park in the upscale LA suburb of Brentwood.

After buying a trolley full of groceries, the Australian actress was
forced to hide in the supermarket's outdoor garden section while a female
friend drove a silver Audi station wagon close to an exit door.

Watts, 38, is hot property with the paparazzi since giving birth to son,
Alexander Pete Schreiber, in Los Angeles on July 25.

Watts' partner, actor Liev Schreiber, and their son were not on today's
shopping expedition.

"The paparazzi just came from everywhere," a Whole Foods employee, who
asked not be named for fear of losing her job, said.

"It becomes a safety issue for customers, especially in the car park,
which is busy enough without all those guys with cameras."

Watts has made few public appearances since giving birth, but Hollywood
photo agency X17 is claiming the first picture of Watts and Alexander.

It was taken yesterday as a smiling Watts and son were sitting at a
Brentwood cafe.

Today, Watts, wearing black shorts, a loose-fitting white top and no
make-up, did not seem bothered by the paparazzi.

As she shopped inside with her friend, photographers with small digital
cameras followed her through the store while others with long lenses and
video cameras shot her from windows and doorways at the front of the
supermarket.

After Watts paid her grocery bill, the LAPD officers and supermarket
security cleared the car park.

The King Kong star hid in the garden section, put on a straw hat and
sunglasses and waited for her car.

The Whole Foods store, nicknamed Whole Pay Cheque by locals because of
its expensive organic food, is located near Watts' multi-million dollar
Brentwood mansion.

Chinese School - Over 30? Well, forget about the entertainment beat

ENTERTAINMENT / Hot Pot Column

Over 30? Well, forget about the entertainment beat

By Liu Wei (China Daily)
Updated: 2007-08-10 14:05

What is the most exciting job aside for being a movie or music star?
Being a reporter covering the entertainment beat. You always have
something to show off to your friends: Autographs and photos? I have got
so tired of them. Who is your idol? Ok, I'll bring five signed albums to
you tomorrow. You want an up-close view of the stars' real appearance?
Who cares when I have seen them more often than my colleagues?

But the job can be as picky just as some stars seeking a perfect
cosmetician. For those eager to be an entertainment reporter in China, my
advice is, be young. That means if you are over 30, forget it, it's
dangerous.

You will find yourself submerged in a group of teenagers and
20-somethings. A bigger mistake is made if you think you can stand out as
a senior. Nobody pays attention to anyone middle-aged among dozens of
cute boys and girls.

Running into a press conference for a film or album release in China, you
might think you have entered a party of disillusioned hippies, pseudo
yuppies and wannabe rappers. Dubious art lovers wearing long hair and a
single earring show up and disappear, holding cameras or notebooks. It's
easy to find the latest fashion elements in the costumes shining around
you. Occasionally you may find one or two who look like they're
middle-aged, but wait, they are in GAP caps and colorful T-shirts.

With graying hair and a frail heart, you'll definitely be lonely among
them. You might want to find another place to work.

But don't judge the entertainment reporters - yuji in Chinese - by
appearance. Sometimes they raise really sharp questions. If embarrassing
the interviewee is the goal, they sometimes do excellent jobs.

In a film's premiere ceremony, a Hong Kong actor was bombarded by a
journalist:

"You have played an undercover cop many times, why do you think all the
directors want you to play that kind of role?"

The actor seemed totally confused and struggled to keep his professional
smile.

"That you may ask the directors."

"Could you talk about your impressive covert role in Infernal Affairs?"

"Sorry, but I am afraid I did not star in that movie."

"Then how about that smart secret cop in Confession of Pain?"

"I was not in that movie either"

"Thank you."

The audience burst into laughter, except for the actor, who could do
nothing but squeeze out a bitter smile. But this disaster did not end.

When he was struggling with his broken putonghua to answer another
question, some reporters began to audibly murmur. What's worse was that
his microphone was playing up and his voice was very low.

When most people cocked their ears to hear what the actor was saying, a
veteran reporter slammed everybody's eardrum with a shout:

"Give him a good microphone! Don't you see he cannot speak well? How can
we hear without a good mic when he speaks so poorly?"

Sometimes I am really confused as to who it is that can't speak well.

Chinese Studies - Doherty told to stay drug-free or face jail

Doherty told to stay drug-free or face jail

(Reuters)
Updated: 2007-08-08 10:14

?

Pete Doherty leaves West London Magistrates Court, August 7,
2007.[Reuters]

?

Singer Pete Doherty, the on-off boyfriend of supermodel Kate Moss, was
told he faced a jail sentence next month if he failed to demonstrate he
was trying to kick his drugs habit.

?

At a London court hearing, district Judge Davinder Lachlar told Doherty
she was adjourning sentencing for a series of drugs offences until
another hearing in four weeks' time.

?

"What I have in mind is a community order or prison," Lachlar said at
West London Magistrates' Court.

?

"If he does not show the motivation in four weeks', it will be prison --
it's as simple as that."

?

She told Doherty's lawyer Sean Curran that a financial penalty was a
"totally unrealistic suggestion."

?

The Babyshambles singer, dressed in a black jacket and white shirt, told
the judge he understood her instructions.

Lachlar had ordered Doherty, 28, to undergo detox treatment at a hearing
last month.

?

On Tuesday, she gave credit to Doherty for attending rehab, but said it
was "early days" as he had only been receiving treatment for about a week.

?

The court heard that Doherty, who fanned himself with his trademark
trilby hat during the hearing, still showed signs of drugs in his system.

?

Lachlar granted Doherty bail until September 4.

?

Doherty pleaded guilty in July to possessing quantities of crack cocaine,
heroin, cannabis and ketamine. He had also pleaded guilty to two driving
offences.

Chinese School - 'The Bourne Ultimatum' earns $70 million

'The Bourne Ultimatum' earns $70 million

(AP)
Updated: 2007-08-06 08:50

Universal Pictures provided this photo of Matt Damon as Jason Bourne in
'The Bourne Ultimatum.' [AP]

Superspy Jason Bourne delivered more than an ultimatum this weekend as
the third in a series of spy thrillers topped box office charts and
delivered the biggest August opening of a film ever.

"The Bourne Ultimatum" took in $70.2 million this weekend, far surpassing
the openings of both of the earlier Bourne films based on novels by
Robert Ludlum.

The opening also pushed last week's top film, "The Simpsons Movie," to
second place, with $25.6 million. The big-screen version of the animated
TV show has topped $315 million worldwide for distributor Twentieth
Century Fox.

"We're really riding high today," said Nikki Rocco, head of distribution
for Universal Pictures, which put out "The Bourne Ultimatum." "The
reviews and audiences rated this one the best one yet."

The second in the series, "The Bourne Supremacy," earned $52.5 million in
its opening weekend in 2004, while the first film, "The Bourne Identity,"
had an opening weekend take of $27.1 million when it debuted in 2002.

Universal's research showed that more than 90 percent of the opening
weekend audience had seen the previous two Bourne films.

"People just love Matt Damon and (director) Paul Greengrass is a
superstar," Rocco said. "Matt Damon is the new James Bond."

The film's opening bodes well for a robust August, which is typically
when the sweltering summer movie season begins to cool off a bit.

"The summer movie season is alive and well even as we are moving into the
home stretch," said Paul Dergarabedian, president of box-office tracker
Media By Numbers. "The Bourne franchise just keeps getting better with
age. The consistency of quality has always been there with the Bourne
movies. That builds loyalty among viewers."

This weekend's top 12 films earned a whopping 36 percent more than the
top 12 did in the same weekend last year.

So far this year, the box office is up 6 percent with revenues of $6.073
billion, while attendance is up 1.42 percent.

"Underdog," Disney's live-action version of the animated crimefighter who
speaks in rhyme, debuted in third place with $12 million.

The weekend's other openers didn't bark quite as loud.

"Hot Rod," a comedy from Paramount, earned $5 million.

"Bratz," a live-action comedy from Lionsgate based on the popular line of
dolls, took in $4.3 million.

While it finished out of the top 12, "Becoming Jane," from Miramax, the
story of author Jane Austen starring Anne Hathaway, took in $1 million on
100 screens for an impressive average of $10,100 per screen in its
opening weekend.

Estimated ticket sales for Friday through Sunday at U.S. and Canadian
theaters, according to Media By Numbers LLC. Final figures will be
released Monday.

1. "The Bourne Ultimatum," $70.2 million.

2. "The Simpsons Movie," $25.6 million.

3. "Underdog," $12 million.

4. "I Now Pronounce You Chuck & Larry," $10.5 million.

5. "Hairspray," $9.3 million.

6. "Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix," $9.3 million.

7. "No Reservations," $6.6 million.

8. "Transformers," $6 million.

9. "Hot Rod," $5 million.

10. "Bratz," $4.3 million.

Learning Chinese - Served with a side of tradition

Served with a side of tradition

By Ye Jun (Beijing Weekend)
Updated: 2007-08-03 09:38

Teahouses have long been where Chinese literati gather for lofty
discussions of historical texts. A new teahouse has just been established
to help revive that tradition. Haohuaxing Teahouse, opened last week on
Donghuamen Dajie near the eastern gate of Forbidden City, is a two-floor,
medium-sized teahouse decorated in traditional Chinese style. From the
typically Chinese window frames and screens, stone blocks at the door, to
the characteristic, comfortable furniture, everything is made in line
with the Chinese classic style. Fittingly, it is located just 200m from
the Imperial Palace.

But what really makes this teahouse different is the precious artwork on
display, on its walls and on the second floor. Beijing has plenty of good
classical Chinese-style teahouses where you can get a decent sip of tea
in a calm environment. This teahouse is one of the few, which offers a
genuine display of ancient Chinese relics.

On the walls of the four private rooms on the ground floor, and a small
pavilion style room at the corner, as well as the entire second floor,
are the genuine painting and calligraphy works of some of the best
Chinese ancient and contemporary artists. The themes of the artworks are
diverse, but most are on landscape or scenery. There are also Qing and
Ming dynasties (1368-1911) furniture on the second floor.

These displayed paintings and calligraphy works are also for sale,
ranging from several thousand to several hundred thousand yuan. The
artworks come with a license proving their authenticity. But it should be
noted that artworks created earlier than 1911 cannot be taken out of
China.

The second floor also has a small display of the owner's personal
collection, of a bronze mirror, bronze sword, and a bronze ding, an
ancient Chinese cooking vessel.

Green tea sells 28-88 yuan a cup, or 68-980 yuan a pot. Or you can order
by the helping, which is three sachets of tea, each weighing 7-8g. There
are almost all the famous teas in China, including dragon well,
Biluochun, oolong, Pu'er, black tea, green tea, and white tea, as well as
nutritional tea. Tea performance is free of charge.

Although the tea menu is only in Chinese, the waiters are college
graduates, so you can expect them to at least speak basic English. If you
happen to be around Wangfujing or Forbidden City, and would like to savor
tea, and appreciate Chinese paintings, Haohuaxing could be a good option.

Location: 63 Donghuamennei Dajie, Dongcheng District. 200 meters east of
the eastern gate of Forbidden City, to the north of the street.
Opening hours: 9am-2pm
Tel: 010-?6522-2039

Nicole Richie and Paris Hilton in an episode of The Simple Life.

The Simple Life, the once-popular reality TV show starring millionaire
ingenues Paris Hilton and Nicole Richie, is going off the air after five
seasons due to low ratings, industry press reported today.

Another network could still pick up the show from the E! network,
according to the Hollywood Reporter, though none has come forward.

The series placed the 26-year-old Hilton, heir to part of the Hilton
Hotel chain fortune, and the 25-year-old Richie, daughter of pop singer
Lionel Richie, in situations the celebrity princesses would likely never
encounter.

In past episodes the overpampered waifs - known for their glamorous
Hollywood party life - milked farm cows, worked at a fast-food outlet and
got jobs as mechanics.

The show's first season in 2003 on the Fox network was a big hit - and
coincided with a steamy Hilton sex video posted on the internet by a
former boyfriend.

Filming of the fifth season was complicated by the high-profile legal
problems of both stars.

Hilton spent 23 days in jail in June for violating probation by driving
with a suspended licence, while Richie was sentenced Friday to four days
behind bars for drunk driving.

E! is scheduled to broadcast the last episode of the series on Sunday.

Paris gets a black makeover for TV show

(Daily Mail)
Updated: 2007-07-31 11:51

Hollywood bad girl Paris Hilton has risked further controversy after
being given a black makeover for a TV show.

The blonde hotel heiress was transformed into a black woman for an
episode of the Fox drama The Simple Life Goes To Camp.

Black looks: A stylist adds the finishing touches to Paris'
transformation (below)

It was a similar transformation for co-star Nicole Richie.

Her makeover followed a court appearance on Friday for driving while
under the influence of drugs.

She was sentenced to four days in jail and now has to make up her mind
between the city jail or the county jail - where Paris did her time.

Transformed: Nicole Richie looks the part for the latest episode of The
Simple Life

Paris and Nicole as they usually look

Paris is used to changing her looks. After her recent 23-day stay in jail
she donned a black wig in a bid to keep a low profile as she jetted off
to Hawaii.

Appearing alongside the "celebutantes" in the latest episode of the drama
camp is award-winning actress Sally Kirkland.

And if the black makeover isn't shocking enough, there are reports in LA
that Paris has agreed to appear - and sing - in a new movie musical.

Paris - whose pop career ended in disaster - will take a leading role in
the futuristic thriller called "Repo! The Genetic Opera".

An insider has said "she will have a number of show-stopping scenes".

The film - which features musical numbers that range from opera to rock -
is set in 2056 when a plague nearly destroys the human race and survival
is dependent upon being able to finance a pricey organ transplant.

Stunning Paris will play the bad-girl daughter of the organ transplant
magnate - played by "Goodfellas" star Paul Sorvino.

of loyal customers, despite opening less than two months ago. As all
stock is shipped over from Korea, the designs in store are unique. There
are several limited edition designs available as well. Fabrics like
natural denim and linen are used to make the hats, and they are well

Shopping for unique

By Halla Mohieddeen (thatsbj)
Updated: 2007-07-26 11:06

It's easy to grumble in Beijing, especially when it comes to the colorful
world of shopping: clothes are too small, bargaining is too tiring,
garments on offer are too tacky for words and so on and so forth. At
first glance yes, there does seem to be an overabundance of lace, pearl
accoutrements and general patter slapped on to clothes (and sometimes
even shoes!) that clearly don't need it. As a result, there's too much
reliance upon "tried and trusted" Western brands like Zara and MNG.

But this is totally unnecessary, and lazy quite frankly; and it took a
trip back to the "shopper's paradise" of Europe for me to realize this.
Sure, it's great to sniff around Topshop and H&M and pick up whatever the
clones of the day are wearing back home, but style isn't about
prescription. It's about finding items that work for you, and there's
certainly no reason why this can't be achieved here.

One trend taking the West by storm, which is easy-peasy to replicate in
Beijing, is the acid-bright color palette. Zesty neon yellows, hot
fuchsia pinks and electric blues are at last finding favor with the
hipsters in London and New York, but have been available in our fair city
for ages. As I flipped through the racks at Oasis, I thought they had a
nerve charging GBP 50 (RMB 752) for a blue jersey dress, when I knew I
could pick up a similar number at a much more reasonable RMB 130;
especially comforting, as I can't imagine prancing around in '80s
throwback clothing much longer than it takes for that particular trend to
die.

Brits went nuts when supermodel Kate Moss launched her own range of
clothing at Topshop, resulting in carnage on Oxford Street when the
collection became available, and stock sold out in about ten seconds (or
thereabouts). But that same look, again, can be achieved here, and at a
fraction of the price. I was stunned to see a waistcoat in her collection
(retailing at around GBP 30, RMB 452), as Surface in Jianwai Soho was
selling something almost identical months earlier, before the Moss
collection launched. And that famous vintage-look poppy-print tea dress
(GBP 120, RMB 1,807) which had British fashionistas wetting themselves
can be replicated here at Quancaohua in the Nali Mall. Whilst not
identical, the style is similar, and the pattern is gorgeous. Our version
is a much more reasonable RMB 670 鈥 another bonus.

There is something quite ironic about the storm of people rushing to copy
Moss's look 鈥 particularly when a lot of her appeal comes from her
originality. But if you're going to base your look on hers, you do get
bonus points for picking up exotic and highly original knickknacks in the
lesser-known malls and boutiques in the East.

The main advantage of shopping here in Beijing, rather than on the high
streets in the West, is that you're more likely to come across something
unique and individual, which, as Kate Moss has proven, is the key to
being stylish. Sure, there's a lot of junk out there, but there's also a
hell of a lot in the way of fantastic threads. It just takes a bit of
patience and imagination.

HK among top 10 fashion cities

(CRI)
Updated: 2007-07-24 16:28

Hong Kong has been ranked as the world's eighth most fashionable city in
a latest survey by Global Language Monitor.

China News Service Thursday quoted HK's Wen Wei Po newspaper as saying,
also listed as one of the world's most fashionable cities is Shanghai,
eastern China's financial hub, taking the fourteenth place on the top 25
list. The California-based Global Language Monitor says the rise of
Shanghai in the list indicates that a Chinese mainland city has for the
first time broken into the big names. New York was elected as the top
fashion city for the fourth consecutive year. Rome came second and Paris
took the third place. Asian cities on the list also include Tokyo, in the
6th place, Singapore in the 10th and Bangkok in the 17th.

Global Language Monitor, a non-profit organization, is in charge of
documenting, analysing and tracking trends in language, especially in
English. The American company also conducts fashion surveys.

Female president next for Fox's '24'

(AP)

?

Fox Entertainment Chairman Peter Liguori fields questions from the media
during the summer meeting of the Television Critics Association,
Sunday, July 22, 2007 in Beverly Hills, Calif.[AP]

?

The United States will have a female president next year 鈥 on the Fox
TV series "24."

Tony Award-winning actress Cherry Jones will play President Allison
Taylor when the show about the exploits of counterterrorism agent Jack
Bauer (Kiefer Sutherland) returns in January for its seventh season, the
network announced Sunday.

Jones' term will coincide with Democratic Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton's
presidential bid, but Fox Entertainment Chairman Peter Liguori said
fiction and real-world politics will not intersect.

"It's a dramatic decision. ... The president is a very important piece of
'24," Liguori told The Associated Press. "We've had a broad array of
presidents on the show; why not a female president?"

The series has been an Oval Office groundbreaker before, with Dennis
Haysbert playing President Palmer, the nation's first black president.

Asked whether Fox would scrutinize scripts for potential election-year
political content, Liguori said that, as with any show, "24" will be
looked at "from a dramaturgical perspective, not a political perspective."

Series co-creators Joel Surnow and Robert Cochran and fellow executive
producer Howard Gordon have always kept real-life politics from the show,
he said.

"'24' took place in an election year in the past," Liguori said. "How you
see Joel, Bob and Howard articulate drama is telling on how they deal
with politics. The two are separated."

In a February article in The New Yorker magazine, Surnow described
himself as a rare conservative in Hollywood. But show producers say they
hold a variety of political viewpoints and deny "24" takes a solely
conservative approach, the magazine reported.

Jones, winner of best-actress Tony Awards for "The Heiress" and "Doubt,"
has appeared in films including "Ocean's Twelve" and "The Perfect Storm"
and has guest-starred on TV shows including the White House drama "The
West Wing."

Liguori and newly appointed Fox programming chief Kevin Reilly appeared
Sunday at the summer meeting of the Television Critics Association to
discuss the upcoming TV season on Fox, owned by Rupert Murdoch's News
Corp.

Liguori said he wouldn't call the past season "disappointing," when asked
about the fact that "24" failed to gain a best drama series Emmy
nomination last week after winning the award in 2006.

He said he admires the "creative courage" of the producers as the show
"re-sets the table each season" with a new story. "It's fun to see them
spit-ball ideas," Liguori added.

Pnyin - How to be a traveling beauty this May holiday

CITYLIFE / Odds & Ends

How to be a traveling beauty this May holiday

Updated: 2006-04-30 12:02

May Day holiday is a time for traveling. Go to the seaside, enjoy
beautiful sunshine and soft breezes and let your mind and body both
relax; hide away in a small town, amble on winding pebble tracks and melt
into the romantic ambiance; or take up your backpack, go mountaineering,
stretch your body and smell the fresh air...They all sound wonderful. But
changing environments can pose threats to delicate skin. How can you
protect yourself and stay beautiful through seven days of traveling? Here
are some helpful suggestions.

If you're going to the seaside:

Typical resort: Sanya
Typical weather: 24-31 C with strong ultraviolet sunrays and fresh air

Warm sunshine, fresh sea breezes, and moist air make the seaside an
agreeable haven from Beijing's dust. But excessive sun exposure can
easily darken your skin, and of course most Chinese girls prefer fair
skin. To prepare for a pleasing and beautiful sojourn at the seaside take
note of following:

1. Night time skin care
Even if you've managed to block the sun in the daytime, give your skin a
soothing rehabilitative treatment in the evening. Cool your glowing skin
with a product like La Mer's newly released The Concentrate (50ml/RMB
3,700).

2. Shine in your bikini.
At the seashore, your body is more in the spotlight than your face. To
become a bikini beauty, you need to take care of every inch of your skin.
Exfoliate with a fine-grained scrub, which will not only let your exposed
skin shine, but also acts as a deep cleanser to help prevent skin from
darkening and roughening after too much sun and salt water.

La Mer The Concentrate

3. Control excess oil
Never try to control oil with foundation that will clog pores when
combined with sun block cream. Gentle oil-control products do a better
job.

4. Hair care.
Beautiful girls never use free hotel shampoos, they carry their own
moisturizing restoring hair care products. Wash your face and hair with
fresh water after swimming to get rid of salty residue, and remember to
protect your hair from too much sun exposure.

Recommended skin care products

1.SPF30/PA++ sunscreen products. HR Premium SPF40/PA++ (RMB 620) protects
your skin from ultraviolet rays.

2.Soothing, moisturizing, and after-sun rehabilitating products. Olay
Intensive Nourishing Emulsion (RMB 120) has natural hot spring
microelements to give rapid relief to burned skin.

3.Gentle exfoliating scrubs.

4.Easy to carry oil-control products.

5.Moisturizing shampoo and hair protection products

Tips

1. Whitening is as important as wearing sunscreen. For dry skins,
moisturizing products are a must. Laneige Water Sleeping Pack (RMB 150)
is a good choice.

2. For sensitive skins, Nuskin Aloe Vera Gel complements sun block
creams. Washing your face with lemonade stops skin from darkening and is
refreshing.

3. Never use body sun block creams on your face. Use special facial sun
block creams. For drier skins, Chanel UV Essential SPF45 (RMB 450) is
nice, but Shu Uemura UV under Base DF (RMB 350) is much fresher.

Isinbayeva toasts success with whine

Updated: 2007-08-01 06:41

MOSCOW: The old adage states it can be lonely at the top, but the
desolation is starting to get to Olympic pole vault champion and world
record holder Yelena Isinbayeva.

The 25-year-old Russian has bemoaned a lack of serious competition in her
event, saying she needs a stronger challenge to enable her to realise her
full potential.

"It's tough to break records on your own," she told media in an interview
from the Italian town of Formia, where she does most of her training.

"Just like in any other sport you need serious rivals who would push you
to greater heights."

She has been virtually unbeatable for the past three years, winning every
major title on offer and drawing comparisons with the great Ukrainian
men's pole vaulter Sergei Bubka.

Isinbayeva has long stated her desire to surpass his unbeaten tally of 35
world records.

She became the first woman to break the five-metre barrier in July 2005
before vaulting 5.01 at the world championships in Helsinki the following
month.

Just over a year ago the bubbly Russian was well on track to break
Bubka's mark as she set 20 world records, indoor and outdoor, in just two
full seasons.

But she has struggled to maintain her record-breaking pace after dumping
her long-time coach Yevgeny Trofimov at the end of 2005. She set just two
indoor marks since her well-publicised move abroad to join Bubka's former
coach Vitaly Petrov.

Tougher standards

"Of course, I'm a bit disappointed that I haven't been able to break
records more often," said Monaco-based Isinbayeva.

"But like I said before, it's tough to break records when all the other
competitors have long finished their attempts."

Isinbayeva also berated meet organisers for not setting tougher standards
for all the competitors.

"Most girls set their initial height at around 3.70-3.80 metres. I wish
they would all start with at least 4.30-4.40, so that I wouldn't have to
wait for some three hours before taking my first attempts," she said.

"It's tough to just sit around not knowing when you should start your
warm-up because you don't know how long it's going to take other girls to
move the bar up to serious heights."

Isinbayeva said she is often forced to copy Bubka's tactics by using just
three attempts in the entire competition.

"You make one vault just to warm-up, then wait for all the others to
finish before making your next attempt. Usually it's the winning one for
me. If everything goes well, then you try to break a record on your third
attempt," she explained. "Of course, it's not always possible because of
long waits between jumps."

Despite her recent shortcomings, Isinbayeva has no regrets about joining
Petrov.

"Actually I feel that I've improved since I changed coaches. I've
improved my technique and got stronger as well," she said.

"I'm not the young, naive girl that I was when I just started my career.
I can make my own decisions now. I know what I need and what is good for
me."

True potential

Petrov said his new pupil has plenty in reserve.

"I'm convinced that she has only scratched the surface of her true
potential," the coach said.

"She is already using much stronger poles that only men could use and it
gives her a lot of room for improvement. With proper training she could
go as high as 5.10-5.15 or even 5.20."

Isinbayeva said she needed to set new goals for herself.

"This year I'm concentrating on the world championships (in Osaka) and
also would like to win the jackpot," she said in reference to the $1
million prize for winning all six Golden League meetings this season.

"I won three of them (Oslo, Paris and Rome) so far, three more to go.
Winning the $1 million bonus is always nice but money is not the main
reason I'm competing," she said. "I make enough money now and can afford
almost anything I want."

The Volgograd native, who won the prestigious Laureus award as the
world's best female athlete last year and was voted the 2005 Athlete of
the Year by the International Association of Athletics Federations
(IAAF), confirmed her desire to compete at least through to the 2012
Olympics in London.

"I've set myself some lofty targets for the next few years," she said,
hinting that she would love to follow Bubka's path and take a role in
public life after her athletics career was over.

"He is a big boss now, serves on the executive board of the International
Olympic Committee (IOC) and he is also a great role model for me," said
Isinbayeva, who was recently nominated for the IAAF athletes commission.

"Working for the IOC would be very interesting in the future, especially
as they are now looking for more prominent women to join the Olympic
movement," she added. "As I've said, I always need a challenge to push
myself to new heights."

Britney hits the beach in lingerie

(Daily Mail)
Updated: 2007-07-20 11:32

Britney Spears is nothing if not spontaneous. The former popstar was
spotted taking an impromptu swim at Malibu in just a hot pink bra and
skimpy knickers.

After a day of house hunting, she decided to strip off and escape the
California heat, squealing with delight as she cooled off in the waves.

In the pink: Britney shows off her bra, not for the first time, during a
beach visit in Malibu

The near see-through ensemble is yet another fashion disaster for the
troubled singer, who in recent times has displayed a penchant for pink
wigs, sheer tops and exposed bras.

Meanwhile, the singer has just agreed to host the opening of LAX Las
Vegas nightclub at the Luxor on August 31.

She is no stranger to Sin City - on New Year's Eve she famously passed
out in a club and had to be carried out during a paid appearance.

Zeta-Jones gets 'full Welsh treatment' ahead of voice-over

(AFP)

Actress Catherine Zeta-Jones, seen here in May 2007, had "the full Welsh
treatment"
to ensure she voiced a documentary in the lilting accent
of her homeland rather than an American twang, it was reported
Thursday.[AFP]

Actress Catherine Zeta-Jones had "the full Welsh treatment" to ensure she
voiced a documentary in the lilting accent of her homeland rather than an
American twang, it was reported Thursday.

Zeta-Jones, star of films including "Chicago" and "The Mask Of Zorro", is
married to fellow Hollywood star Michael Douglas and has faced some
criticism in Wales, where she hails from, for allegedly toning down her
accent.

Television producer John Morgan visited their home on the Spanish island
of Majorca to record her providing a voiceover for a documentary about
Welsh celebrities climbing Mount Kilimanjaro in Tanzania.

"When I first met her in New York to talk about the project, she was
making a film where she had an American accent, so you could hear it in
her voice," he told the Welsh newspaper Western Mail.

"So we made sure that when we went to record her in her home in Spain,
she had the full Welsh treatment before we started recording."

He said that three other Welsh people accompanied him and added: "We
encouraged her to talk to her dad on the phone too.

"The end result sounds wonderful."

Eva Longoria heads back to work

(WENN)

Eva Longoria

Newlywed actress Eva Longoria has returned to the Desperate Housewives
set eleven days after her fairytale wedding.

Longoria, who married French basketball ace Tony Parker at the 17th
century Chateau of Vaux le Vicomte in Paris on 7 July, arrived at the
Universal Studios fresh from her honeymoon in the Caribbean Island of
Turks and Caicos.

The 32-year-old's spokeswoman Liza Anderson says, "It was a great
wedding, but it was time to come home.

"I got a call from her this morning (and) she was already at work. She
sounded so great, really upbeat. She's completely content."

Anderson says the couple spent much of their honeymoon dining on good
food and playing ping pong.

She adds, "It was just her and Tony. They had a private villa. She's
completely relaxed and rejuvenated. She had a full week alone with Tony
to decompress.

"It was the perfect balance to gear up for Season 4. So she's really
excited. She wasn't dreading work at all."

HSK Exam - Journey to a water wonderland

CITYLIFE / Travel

Journey to a water wonderland

By Han Jing (Shanghai Daily)
Updated: 2007-07-16 10:35

Jiuzhaigou in Sichuan Province is one of the natural wonders of China
with its lakes, waterfalls, ponds, streams, springs, rivers and rapids
combining to create a watery dreamland.

As a Shanghainese who has made lots of visits during holidays to the
Chinese classical gardens in nearby cities like Suzhou and Hangzhou, I
finally made up my mind to venture somewhere different, to a place
distinct from the hustle and bustle of the metropolitan life.

Fortunately, the vast motherland has many, many locations where one can
view the beauty of Nature. And so, at the end of June, there I was in
Sichuan Province in Southwest China.

Sichuan has always taken pride in its reputation of a land of abundance
and has a whole host of natural wonders completely different from
Shanghai. The journey seemed to enhance my expectations from the very
beginning.

Following a quick look around Chengdu, the provincial capital, I couldn't
wait to make a bee-line for my long-desired dreamland destination -
Jiuzhaigou, also known as the Valley of Nine Villages.

But first there was a real test of my endurance and patience - a
nine-hour bus ride from Chengdu.

Apparently, viewing the spectacular scenery was doomed to be hard-earned.

The narrow and rugged mountain paths have endowed Sichuan with poetic
lines from ancient times.

That's because traveling around the province is harder than scaling the
sky.

No wonder it is said that Sichuan driving license holders are famous for
their motoring skills, especially for getting around precipitous paths on
mountainsides on rainy nights which happen a lot.

I felt much at ease on a bus with a driver who boasted nearly 30 years
driving experience in such circumstances.

Still, the long odyssey before I reached Jiuzhaigou proved to be to my
benefit because it made my first sight of the valley absolutely
worthwhile.

Jiuzhaigou is about 430 kilometers from Chengdu and lies within the
boundary of Jiuzhuigou County of the Aba Autonomous Prefecture.

Tibetan and Qiang ethnic minority groups constitute the majority of the
population. There are nine Tibetan villages scattered throughout the
valley, hence its name, although in fact we could only gain access to
three of them.

What makes Jiuzhaigou special are its water - rivers, lakes, springs,
streams, ponds, waterfalls and rapids. As the popular saying goes: "You
won't enjoy seeing any other mountain once you've seen Yellow Mountain
and neither will you favor any other waterscape when you're back from
Jiuzhaigou."

Naomi Watts

Naomi Watts has signed on to star opposite Clive Owen in "The
International," an action thriller that Tom Tykwer is directing for
Columbia Pictures.

The plot centers on an obsessive Interpol agent (Owen) who spearheads an
investigation into one of the world's most high-profile and powerful
banking institutions in an attempt to expose them for worldwide arms
brokering, corruption and murder. Watts will play a Manhattan assistant
district attorney who partners with the agent to take down the bank.

Eric Singer wrote the screenplay.

Watts, who most recently starred in "The Painted Veil," next stars
opposite Viggo Mortensen in David Cronenberg's "Eastern Promises."

Learning Mandarin - Watson turns to Radcliffe and Grint for advice on boys

Watson turns to Radcliffe and Grint for advice on boys

When it comes to getting advice on the opposite sex, British actress Emma
Watson turns to her Harry Potter co-stars Daniel Radcliffe and Rupert
Grint.

The young star, who plays the muggle-born witch Hermione Granger in the
hit movie adaptations of JK Rowling's literary series, is a
self-confessed 'mad texter'.

Watson admits that when not filming the Potter flicks, she is always
sending text messages to Radcliffe and Grint, whose advice comes
extremely handy when dealing with boys.

And, she also helps them out when they need to decipher a message sent to
them by a girl.

"I am always texting Dan and Rupert when we are not working. And we are
always swapping girl and boy advice when we're together," Contactmusic
quoted her, as saying.

"It's quite funny - I am like, 'Oh, I have got this text from a boy, what
on earth do I say? What does this translate to in boy language? I don't
understand,' and they will be like, 'Well, this means this.' I have got
my own personal on-set boy text translators," she adds.

Watson will now be seen on the big screen alongside her two co-stars when
the movie adaptation of the fifth book Harry Potter and the Order of the
Phoenix hits theatres on July 11.

Free Chinese Lesson - Hairspray

ENTERTAINMENT / Coming Soon

Hairspray

Updated: 2007-07-09 14:26

Tracy Turnblad, a big girl with big hair and an even bigger heart, has
only one passion--dancing. Her dream is to appear on "The Corny Collins
Show," Baltimore's hippest dance party on TV. Tracy seems a natural fit
for the show except for one not-so-little problem--she doesn't fit in.
Her plus-sized figure has always set her apart from the cool crowd, which
she is reminded of by her loving but overly protective plus-sized mother,
Edna. That doesn't stop Tracy because if there is one thing that this
girl knows, it's that she was born to dance. After wowing Corny Collins
at her high school dance, Tracy wins a spot on his show and becomes an
instant on-air sensation, much to the chagrin of the show's reigning
princess, Amber Von Tussle, and her scheming mother, Velma, who runs
television station WYZT. Even worse for Amber is the fact that it's not
just the audience who loves the new girl in town; Amber's sweetheart,
Link Larkin, seems to be smitten with Tracy's charms as well. This dance
party gets personal as a bitter feud erupts between the girls as they
compete for the coveted "Miss Teenage Hairspray" crown. At school,
however, a short stint in detention and raised-eyebrows caused by the
budding relationship between her best friend Penny Pingleton and Seaweed
opens Tracy's eyes to a bigger issue than the latest dance craze or the
coolest hairdo--racial inequality. Throwing caution to the wind, she
leads a march with Motormouth Maybelle to fight for integration and winds
up with an arrest warrant instead. Tracy is on the lam now and goes
underground--literally--to her best friend Pennys basement. Has Tracy's
luck finally run out? Will she miss the final dance-off against Amber and
forfeit the title of "Miss Hairspray," or will she sing and dance her way
out of trouble again?

Jessica Alba poses with Honor on cover of OK

One reason Jessica Alba named her baby daughter Honor was that she felt her own was pretty bland. "I was always irritated that my name was Jessica," the 27-year-old actress tells OK! magazine.

"Come on, it's a very '80s name, because there were tons of Jessicas in every school I went to. There's something great about having a unique name. It's a part of your identity."

She and husband Cash Warren welcomed Honor Marie Warren last month. Alba poses with Honor on the cover of OK!, and all three are featured in a photo spread inside the new issue. The magazine, which recently landed a million-dollar deal with new mom Jamie Lynn Spears, doesn't comment on its pacts with celebrities, though Alba reportedly sold the first shots of Honor to OK! for $1.5 million.

"It's still amazing that she was living inside of Jessica," said Warren, who met Alba on the set of the 2005 film "The Fantastic Four," which co-starred Alba as the Invisible Woman and employed Warren as a director's assistant.

Who will be the disciplinarian?

"I think we're pretty even," Alba said. "We're good at communicating and bouncing things off each other. We'll stick to our guns, even when she gives us pout face!"

Warren, however, aims to be the good cop: "I'll hide. Babe, you punish her!"
