Chinese Online Class - Beyonce and Jay-Z engaged

Beyonce and Jay-Z engaged

Beyonce Knowles
It seems that pop star Beyonce may soon be walking down the aisle as beau
Jay-Z popped the question during a luxury holiday in Cannes at the end of
May.
The couple, who have been dating since 2002, are reportedly getting set
for a big autumn wedding in Hawaii.
"This will be the hip-hop wedding to end all hip-hop weddings," the News
of the World quoted a close pal, as saying.
Jay-Z, who cancelled a tour of the US promoting his Roc-A-Fella business
empire to see his lady love perform in the UK, has apparently promised
Beyonce "the biggest diamond she can fit on her finger" when she decides
on a design for her engagement ring.
Beyonce had recently revealed that she wanted to settle down and have
kids.
"I want to get married and really want a familyin a perfect world I'd
have two boys and a girl. You know someone loves you by the way he treats
you and respects you. Me and Jay respect each other," she said.
A spokesman for Jay-Z however refused to comment on the couple's reported
engagement or wedding plans.

Chinese Tutor - Brangelina secretly planning a lavish wedding

Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt in Cannes for the 60th Annual Film Festival
On the hills of her acting career break report, comes a greater new
report that suggests Angelina Jolie is secretly planning a lavish wedding
for her and partner Brad Pitt.
Talk is heating up that Jolie has accepted Brad's proposal and is now
organizing a nuptial, claimed to be a lot greater than Brad's wed to
former actress wife Jennifer Aniston, which cost $1 million. "The wedding
could end up being twice the size of the one Brad had with Jennifer,"
said a source.
"Angelina has been reluctant to get married for a third time, for obvious
reasons," Grazia magazine quoted a source as saying. "Brad has been
persistent and has now given in, but she wants the day to be really
memorable. While she doesn't want it to be unnecessarily lavish, that's
not her style, it will still be an event Hollywood will never forget."
The greatest part is "She also wants their children to see it as a huge
celebration of her and Brad's love for them. The daytime part of the
celebration will be for the kids, with clowns and balloons and
fire-eaters. But then the real party will begin in the evening." Jolie
reportedly will start looking at dates and venues in the autumn.
If only the wedding report is to be believed then it will be Jolie's
third marriage. She was previously married to actors Jonny Lee Miller and
Billy Bob Thornton.

"Pirates" grosses $58 million in limited release
(Reuters)
Updated: 2007-05-26 09:04
LOS ANGELES - "Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End," the third film
in the Walt Disney Co's multi-billion franchise, took in $58 million at
worldwide box offices in limited showings before its wider
record-breaking release on Friday, Disney said.
The film, starring Johnny Depp as the woozy pirate Captain Jack Sparrow,
nearly sold out late-night showings at U.S. cinemas on Thursday night for
a total of $17 million.
Overseas, Wednesday and Thursday night showings scored $41.1 million,
Disney said.
The film was released in 52 countries and territories in addition to the
United States and that release widened to 102 countries on Friday.
"At World's End" will be opening in a record 4,362 North American
theatres, about 110 more than "Spider-Man 3" and about 200 more than
DreamWorks Animation SKG Inc.'s "Shrek the Third," which set an
opening-weekend record last week for an animated film at $122 million.
The figures come from Media by Numbers, a box office tracking firm.
Mark Zoradi, president of Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures marketing
and Distribution, said U.S. exit surveys "gave the film among the highest
numbers in Disney's history and placed it well above comparable scores"
for the first two "Pirates" films.

HSK - 'Heroes' first season ends with boom
ENTERTAINMENT / Television
'Heroes' first season ends with boom
(AP)
Updated: 2007-05-22 11:37
NEW YORK - The cheerleader, New York and the world are safe - thanks to
"Heroes." Every character still standing in NBC's "Heroes" universe
played their role in stopping serial killer and superpower thief Sylar
during the freshman series' gripping season ender.
Pint-sized human global positioning system Molly Walker (Adair Tishler)
used her ability to track Sylar down. Mind reader Matt Parkman (Greg
Grunberg) distracted him with a storm of bullets. Superpowered single mom
Niki ( Ali Larter) landed a crushing blow with a parking meter. And Hiro
Nakamura (Masi Oka) slashed him with a sword (but not the same weapon he
tracked down in previous episodes).
Of course, everyone should've been more worried about the superabsorbent
Peter Petrelli ( Milo Ventimiglia), who was one flash away from turning
into a mushroom cloud.
Leading up to the finale's big bang, which had been foreshadowed for
months with psychic paintings and dream sequences, the biggest question
became: Which man is going to explode and destroy most of New York? Evil
foe Sylar or good guy Petrelli?
"Turns out you're the villain, Peter. I'm the hero," Sylar cooed before
Peter started going nuclear. Uh oh.
Although Peter was willing to sacrifice himself, his brother flew in to
help him out. Literally.
"You saved the cheerleader so we could save the world," flying
congressman Nathan Petrelli told his blazing brother before sacrificing
himself to hoist Peter up, up and away to safely explode somewhere among
the stars.
Before the fireworks, Angela Petrelli (Cristine Rose), Peter and Nathan's
witchy mother, was revealed to be working with the clandestine
organization that's been very familiar with the "Heroes" all along and
very interested in seeing Manhattan go kaboom. In one scene, she offered
her indestructible granddaughter Claire "a place to belong and a family."
But, in one of her most fantastic feats, cheerleader Claire coolly
whispered "I already have a family" before lunging out of her biological
father's office window and faceplanting into the sidewalk stories below.
Of course, Claire being Claire, she nonchalantly stood up and strolled
away to assist in the final fight.
Teases of what's to come were slipped in throughout the episode. Sylar's
true fate was questioned with a trail of blood leading to a nearby
manhole. Molly foreshadowed a boogeyman "a lot worse" than Sylar. And, at
the end of the episode, Hiro found himself transported all the way back
to feudal Japan, staring at a samurai warrior toting around the
omnipresent "Heroes" double-helix-esque symbol underneath a shadowy
eclipse.
Are these "Heroes" older than the moon?

U.N. rights office accuses Sudan of Darfur attacks

GENEVA - The United Nations human rights office on Friday accused
Sudanese security forces of killing more than 100 people in
indiscriminate machinegun attacks on villages in South Darfur over a
three-month period.
In a report covering January-March, U.N. High Commissioner for Human
Rights Louise Arbour called on the government to carry out an independent
investigation into the attacks near Nyala, in which she said Border
Intelligence personnel had been involved.
"In all instances, witnesses described hundreds of heavily armed
attackers, many of who were identified as Border Intelligence personnel,"
the report said. "During all the incidents, attackers fired
indiscriminately from the outskirts of the settlements with heavy
machineguns and rocket propelled grenades, before entering the
settlements and shooting men."

ENTERTAINMENT / 60th Cannes Film Festival
Cannes film festival hits 60
(Reuters)
Updated: 2007-05-16 15:24
Workers on the roof of the Festival Palace use ropes to position the
official poster of the 60th Cannes Film Festival in Cannes May 11,
2007.[Reuters]
Cannes Film Festival turns 60 this year, and the diamond milestone means
a long line of stars jostling with lesser-known names of arthouse cinema
for media attention and fans' adoration on the famed red carpet.
The opening film gives a taste of both worlds, with respected Chinese
director Wong Kar Wai presenting his English-language movie "My Blueberry
Nights" featuring singer Norah Jones, Jude Law and Natalie Portman.
The glamourous Wednesday evening gala screening is the start of 11 days
of networking, air kissing, dealmaking and backstabbing in the sun-kissed
Riviera resort, host to the grande dame of the world's film festivals.
The main competition lineup features over 20 films, including five U.S.
productions and heavyweight directors like Quentin Tarantino, the Coen
brothers, Gus Van Sant, Sarajevo-born Emir Kusturica and Russia's
Alexander Sokurov.
Critics are calling the selection one of the strongest in recent memory,
although competitions have a habit of promising more than they deliver.
"I think this is probably the Cannes selection that has excited me most
in a decade," said Mark Cousins, a leading film critic and Cannes veteran.
"It is because of the likes of Van Sant, Sokurov, Kusturica and Wong -
these are major directors who have consistently delivered quality films
over a number of years."
He expects Van Sant and the Coen brothers to stand out among the U.S.
entrants, while Tarantino's "Death Proof," already in U.S. cinemas as
part of a double bill, was a box office flop.
In the race for the Palme d'Or top prize they are up against more obscure
film makers like France's Catherine Breillat and Christophe Honore, Kim
Ki-duk and Lee Chang-dong of South Korea, Romania's Cristian Mungiu and
Ulrich Seidl of Austria.
MUSIC, HEALTHCARE, ENVIRONMENT
As always, the competition risks turning into a sideshow, with Hollywood
sequel "Ocean's 13," starring George Clooney and Brad Pitt, premiering in
Cannes, and Angelina Jolie promoting "A Mighty Heart" based on the story
of slain reporter Daniel Pearl.
They are just two among hundreds of pictures being promoted in Cannes,
where the booming market has made it a key date in film executives'
calendars.
There are no major blockbusters at the festival this year, unlike 2005's
Star Wars sequel and 2006's "The Da Vinci Code," which went on to gross
$758 million worldwide despite a critical mauling in Cannes.
There are also few overtly political films, although Michael Moore's
documentary "SiCKO," about the U.S. healthcare system, is likely to cause
a stir just as anti-Bush polemic "Fahrenheit 9/11" did when it won the
2004 Palme d'Or.
Heartthrob Leonardo DiCaprio is in town with "The 11th Hour," his
environmental documentary that is the latest sign of Hollywood's growing
preoccupation with global warming.
And although no British film appears in the main competition in 2007,
after Ken Loach won the Palme d'Or in 2006 with "The Wind That Shakes the
Barley," some of its biggest musical acts are set to light up the silver
screen.
Martin Scorsese is expected to present clips from his upcoming
documentary about the Rolling Stones, "Control" looks at the life and
premature death of Joy Division's Ian Curtis and "The Future is
Unwritten" examines the Clash's Joe Strummer.
U2 frontman Bono is expected in Cannes for "U2 3D," another
"rockumentary" on the Croisette this year.

Michael Douglas wants to kill Catherine Zeta-Jones in a film
(Fametastic)
Updated: 2007-04-29 11:49
Michael Douglas & Catherine Zeta-Jones
Michael Douglas has revealed he's love to work alongside wife Catherine
Zeta-Jones again - but only if he can kill either her or her on-screen
lover.
He said recently: "I'd be the villain, because nobody likes older guys
with younger women."
"So we'll get her a young leading man and I'll be the bad guy. And I'll
'off' one of them."
But he won't do a rom-com with her: "As far as doing a romance in a film
for a married couple, audiences seem to lack the excitement, knowing in
the back of their mind these people are together all the time."
The two previously starred together in Traffic in 2000.

Chinese Mandarin - Hot Fuzz
ENTERTAINMENT / Review
Hot Fuzz
By Michael Phillips (Chicago Tribune)
Updated: 2007-04-24 17:12
In its climactic village assault, the English comedy "Hot Fuzz" risks
becoming the excessive, slow-mo-slaughter affair it's satirizing. But the
best of it is a riot -- a "Bad Boys II" fireball hurled with exquisite
accuracy at a quaint English town peopled by Agatha Christie archetypes.
On the strength of "Shaun of the Dead," his droll zombie bash, the
spot-on "Don't Scream" trailer in "Grindhouse" and now this, director
Edgar Wright is one of the four or five contemporary directors of comedy
worth watching. He is now officially ready to leave the genre mashup game
behind him, for the sake of his own development. But in "Hot Fuzz," he
and his stars, Simon Pegg (a geekier Daniel Craig) and Nick Frost
(amiable English sheepdog, without the hair) nail the essential, greasy
Michael Bay cooler-than-thou law enforcement attitude, which isn't
traditionally British in the least. It's inherently funny seeing the
sneers and explosions relocated, against their will, to the land of
amateur theatricals and errant swans. The results, including a splendid
first hour, put most American cop-movie spoofs to shame.
Despite the gore and the fetishized automatic weaponry, "Hot Fuzz" has a
relatively low body count. Certainly it has nothing on Bay's schlockular
oeuvre, particularly "Bad Boys II," a film that comes in for highly
detailed analysis here. So does the Keanu Reeves/Patrick Swayze bauble
"Point Break," another favorite of action movie fan Officer Danny
Butterman (Frost), who partners with Nicholas Angel (Pegg), a fierce,
by-the-book London copper recently transferred to the model
Gloucestershire village of Sandford.
To Angel, Sandford comes across as a strange mixture of Brigadoon and the
town in "The Wicker Man." Jim Broadbent plays the jolly Sandford police
chief who's constantly serving cake and telling Angel to go easy on the
underage pub regulars; Timothy Dalton oozes don't-trust-me vibes as the
local supermarket manager; Edward Woodward, who starred in the original
"Wicker Man," is the head of the local village improvement association,
whose primary mission is to rid the main street of an unwanted Living
Statue. When several of the locals start dying under mysterious
circumstances, Angel's inquiries are met with an eerie calm.
As in "Shaun of the Dead," director Wright displays his dazzling skill
with pointlessly kinetic montage. An act as simple as two cops going to
the local pub and ordering a couple of pints becomes an occasion for
BAM-WHAMMP-GUNNNGGG sound effects and hyperactive editing rhythms. Later
in the picture, after the bodies have piled up, the velocity of "Hot
Fuzz" shifts from the quaintly provincial to full-on John Woo. (One of
the best running gags, the officers' pursuit of the swan, is like a
bookend to Woo's own cinematic obsession with doves, backed by fireballs.)
It is here, in the final 20 minutes of this two-hour, one-minute comedy,
that "Hot Fuzz" goes a bit fuzzy. You sense Wright and the gang feeling
the need to deliver the big wows for a bona-fide action audience. (It
worked; the film is already a huge hit in England.) Even "Shaun of the
Dead," which was 20 minutes shorter than this one, grew a bit tiresome.
It's still well worth seeing. Pegg and Frost make a peerless comedy team,
and you rarely catch either of them acting funny. Pegg in particular is
terrific, part "NYPD"-era David Caruso, part raging action twit. He could
even become a star of Bad Boysian-style action thrillers if he isn't
careful, and if he's in thrall to the right (or wrong) agent.

Synopsis:
In the middle of the African savannah, in south-eastern Burkina Faso, in
the safety of their high tower, termites are hard at work when a drama
turns their neat and ordered life upside down.
A deluge of tropical rain floods galleries and chambers, causing cracks
and breaches to appear in the termites' castle. Not far from there, a
colony of terrible, carnivorous ants prepares to attack. They'll take
advantage of the tower's fragility to launch a veritable assault. A
merciless war ensues
Shot with real insects and animals, this documentary fiction films ants
and termites closer than ever seen before. Reality has never seemed more
like a horror film!

Learn Chinese online - The day the dragon raised its head
ENTERTAINMENT / Hot Pot Column
The day the dragon raised its head
By Lin Jinghua (China Daily)
Updated: 2007-03-22 10:34
I'm not a superstitious person, but recently found myself following
superstition unwittingly by getting my hair cut on the second day of the
second month of the Chinese lunar calendar, which fell on March 20 this
year.
There is a belief in China, particularly in the North, that forbids one
from having a haircut in the first month of the Chinese lunar calendar,
as doing so will bring a fatal curse on one's uncle.
In line with this belief, people usually put up with their long hair
until the second day of the second month, which is known as "the day the
dragon raises its head," symbolizing the coming of rain, or an abundant
spring.
It is believed that a haircut on this day will bring one good luck in the
new year.
Although I don't have any uncle, I did keep my hair until this day. But I
didn't expect that so many others would do so too.
I made an appointment with my hairstylist for 8 pm. I got there on time
but found that he was still busy with the previous customer. I've never
seen a hair salon filled with so many people. All eight chairs were
occupied and all the three stylists were busy snipping away, with hordes
of others waiting their turn patiently.
It was already half-past 8 when my turn came. "You are my 16th customer
today," said my hairstylist Qin.
Before he started with me, he kept exercising his fingers, adding that
four more customers were expected later. "I'm not sure when I'll able to
leave the shop, maybe after midnight," he said. He was yet to have his
dinner.
Qin had started the day at 10 in the morning and had only managed a
15-minute break for lunch. That meant he had worked for more than 10
hours continuously.
"If you had not made an appointment, you would have missed the lucky
day," he joked.
According to Qin, the day is always one of the busiest in the year.
I saw several people come in looking for service, but were all turned
away for lacking an appointment. They looked quite disappointed.
Lucky me!
I found out later that most hair salons and barber shops in Beijing that
day were crowded with people. At the Silian Barber Shop alone, one of the
largest and oldest of its kind in the city, its 60 barbers had started
work at 7 in the morning. But they still could not meet the demand.
Many unlicensed barbers in hutongs and old community areas, also saw very
good business.
The next day when I came into office, one of my colleagues noticed my
hair.
"Finally, you got your haircut," she said. "You really are
superstitious," she said.
Well, let me just say, another of my colleagues who decided tradition was
not for him, got his punishment - his new hairstyle is really weird!

Jolie wants to play Hawach
(The Daily Telegraph )
Updated: 2007-03-02 09:14
Unicef ambassador Angelina Jolie has expressed interest in playing
embattled mum Melissa Hawach in a movie version of her mission to snatch
back her abducted children from their estranged Aussie father.
The Hollywood superstar who has made a name offscreen for her
humanitarian work, yesterday expressed her interest in buying the film
rights to Canadian Mrs Hawach's story.
Mrs Hawach was reunited with her children, Hannah and Cedar, after hiring
two former Australian and New Zealand special forces soldiers to steal
them back from her ex-husband, Joseph last year.
Jolie's representative called Mrs Hawach's Sydney agent Sean Anderson
yesterday to pitch the actor for the part.
The agent said a spokesman for Jolie made the bid in a phone call and was
expecting further details of Jolie's interest in an email from her
production company overnight.
"She has shown interest in playing Melissa," Mr Anderson said, adding
that five major studios had already bid on the harrowing tale, including
20th Century Fox.
"For someone with Angelina's profile to be keen, it's obviously very
flattering," he said.

More than one Chinese Oprah to sing praises about
(China Daily)
Updated: 2007-02-15 09:13
When an American asks me about a major personality or cultural event in
China, I cannot just click on wikipedia.com and show them a concise
description. I don't have that luxury. Instead, what I use is a kind of
cross-cultural profiling system to help Americans better understand our
own celebrities.
For example, the classic fantasy novel Journey to the West (a.k.a. Monkey
King) is China's equivalent of The Lord of the Ring and Harry Potter
combined. A Dream of the Red Mansions? It has the minutiae of Jane Austin
coupled with the grandeur of Shakespeare. I'm sure Cao Xueqin or the Bard
did not know the other existed.
Nowadays we are hooked to the global village in the world of television.
Supergirls is an imitation of American Idol, which in turn is an
imitation of Pop Idol. Let's Shake It borrowed the concept from So You
Think You Can Dance. Many more Chinese shows wanted to clone Friends, Sex
and the City, Survivor, among others, but flopped.
Chinese people often ask me: Does America have a show like our Spring
Festival gala? Well, I stumble: There is The Kennedy Center Honors, which
highlights three stars instead of our line-up of 3,000. The New Year
countdown at Time Square is certainly more densely populated, but the
host Dick Clark is older than Zhao Zhongxiang and Ni Ping combined.
I heard that in the 1970s, when television sets were scarce in China, we
always aired on Lunar New Year's Eve The White-Haired Girl, in which the
evil landlord kills the poor farmer and is later killed by a bunch of
revolutionary farmers. In the US, the perennial favorite on Christmas Eve
is It's a Wonderful Life, about a man who wants to kill himself but is
saved by an angel. If we had a comparable feel-good movie, we'd broadcast
it repeatedly because we no longer advocate revenge against evil
landlords or real-estate developers. We need harmony.
For a while, every Western newspaper would stick the label of "China's
Oprah" to every high profile Chinese woman. That, to me, is professional
laziness and cultural inertia. Hung Huang is not China's Oprah. The
closest she will come to is China's Rosie O'Donnell. Chen Luyu of Pheonix
TV must be fuming: She is the one who exchanged a weekly celebrity
interview for daily dispensing of chicken-soup and warm fuzzy gossip.
Faye Wong has a certain resemblance to Alanis Morissette, among others,
but with a longer shelf life. Supergirl Zhang Liangying is desperately
taking on the mantle of Mariah Carey, not realizing how tacky the latter
is. Her nemesis Li Yuchun is comfortably in the mode of k.d. lang.
Paris Hilton in the eyes of Americans is almost like what Sister Hibiscus
is to Chinese even though they come from disparate family backgrounds.
One was born with a silver spoon in her mouth, the other with a broken
chopstick. One has a svelte figure while the other tries to fit into the
S-shape. But they are both famous for being famous, with no tangible
talent to back up their fame or is it notoriety?

Demi Moore and Justin Timberlake in 'The Graduate' remake?
(ANI)
Updated: 2007-02-05 15:01
Actress Demi Moore and R&B singer Justin Timberlake are reportedly in the
fray for playing the lead roles in the remake of the 1960s hit 'The
Graduate'.
The 44-year-old 'Striptease' star will play the lustful Mrs Robinson, and
the 25- year old 'My Love' singer will be the awkward virgin Benjamin
Braddock, the role made famous by acting legend Dustin Hoffman, Moviehole
quoted a report in Sky News, as saying.
Meanwhile, it has also been reported that Moore was planning to remake
the film with hubby Ashton Kutcher, who is 16 year her junior, but
dropped the idea later.
The 1967 film directed by Mike Nichols is based on a novel by Charles
Webb and tells the story of an aimless graduate Benjamin, who is seduced
by an older Mrs Robinson, but ultimately falling in love with the
seductress' daughter Elaine.
Between 2000 and 2002 the project was revived as a play and appeared in
London and on Broadway. The film is ranked 9th in the American
Institute's list 100 Years... 100 Laughs.

Learn Mandarin online - Why Chinese humor is so damn funny
ENTERTAINMENT / Hot Pot Column
Why Chinese humor is so damn funny
By Patrick Whiteley (China Daily)
Updated: 2007-01-18 21:52
I enjoy reading Hot Pot columnist Wang Xiaofang's pertinent observations
on modern Chinese society but yesterday my learned colleague made the
bizarre claim that Chinese people do not have a sense of humor.
Wang, you've got to be kidding?
Chinese are hilarious and have been making the world laugh for ages. One
of the funniest books I have ever read was penned by a Chinese man 500
years ago. Journey to the West by Wu Cheng'en is a marvelous mix of
folk-lore, allegory, religion, history and anti-bureaucratic satire. The
story is about a monkey who leads a monk, a pig and fish to India to
retrieve Buddha's scrolls in an effort to find enlightenment.
Monkey is a boastful genius who offends every monster or deity he meets.
His standard greeting is: "I suppose you want to fight me, don't you?"
Then he thrashes them senseless. In the early 1980s, my brother and I
watched the English version of the Monkey TV series every day after
school. The ridiculous antics of this ancient Chinese comedy traveled
through time and space and had us Aussie kids in stitches. Pigsy was my
brother's favorite. The porker only wanted to eat banquets and chase
pretty girls. For about a year, my brother and his little mates called
themselves "Pigsy!"
I re-read the Wu classic recently and it's even funnier 25 years later.
When monkey finally reaches India, Buddha's scroll keepers demand a
bribe. Monkey refuses, so the corrupt officials give him blank paper. The
pilgrims cannot understand why Buddha would employ such rogues. "As a
matter of fact," Buddha says to them, "blank scrolls such as these are
the true scriptures." That Buddha always gets the best punch lines.
Fast forward 500 years and Stephen Chow's Kung Fu Hustle keeps the
Chinese chuckles coming. His movie has magic, monsters, and just like in
Monkey, lots of nonsense too. In one scene, Chow's side-kick throws
butter knives at a crazy woman and the blunt blades keep bouncing off the
walls and landing in Chow's body. It happens three times, and each time
is funnier than the last. Simple gags are the best gags.
Wang claimed Chow's exaggerated style was an example why the Chinese do
not have much of a sense of humor (I'm presuming Wang is exempting
himself from this sweeping generalization). It's kind of ironic, that
someone such as Wang, who is renowned as an online funny guy, can be so
damn serious and critical about everybody else's humor. That's not very
funny Wang.
One fact we all know of is that the Chinese sense of humor did not
coincide with blogging.
I'm sure Peking Man who lived in the capital 400,000 years ago chuckled
when he saw his buddy slip on a banana peel.
Laughter is a timeless joy and is not limited by race or even age.
A friend told me about his 8-year-old son's outrageous prank. He asked
his boy to take a picture of something funny. The boy ran away with a
digital camera in hand and soon returned with a big grin. The cheeky boy
had taken a picture of his bottom. Father and son looked at the picture
and laughed themselves silly.
A sense of humor, my dear Wang, is a matter of opinion and to paraphrase
Clint Eastwood, my favorite Hollywood comedian: "Opinions are like
bottoms, everybody's got one."

Learn mandarin - Beware of the flu!
CITYLIFE / Odds & Ends
Beware of the flu!
By Claire (chinadaily.com.cn)
Updated: 2007-01-16 11:10
For lots of people living in Beijing, the beginning of 2007 is a
combination of being happy and uncomfortable. They're happy for the
coming of the New Year, but at the same time they feel bad for having
caught the flu.
Starting last December, lots of people have gotten colds in Beijing.
Local television stations report that hospitals are filled with people
with the flu running fevers. What can office workers do to beat the flu?
First, open the windows for 15 to 30 minutes a day, to let fresh air into
the room. Because it's so cold outside, many people keep the windows in
their homes or offices shut all day, which creates an environment where
bacteria can easily grow and spread. If some people in the office have
colds already, it's a good idea to regularly sanitize the office. Two
easy ways to do this is to either add vinegar to the humidifier, or mop
the floor with disinfectant.
Second, make sure the room isn't too dry. Heating systems dry out the
air, and dry air weakens the body's immune system. According to research,
humans function best in air that has a 55 percent humidity index. So
drinking more water, and making the floor a little wet will help.
Third, exercise more to make yourself stronger. The stronger you are, the
less likely it is you'll catch a cold.
Four, don't go to public places too frequently. The more people there
are, the more chance you have of being infected.

In winter it can feel like the entire world is cold. People complain
about the weather and are constantly looking for new ways to keep warm,
but in doing so, many overlook the small things that can keep in the heat.
Cushions
Everyone loves a cushion. Whether at work, reading, or watching TV,
sitting on, or holding cushions can make you feel warm and comfortable.
Here Citylife has compiled a list of the best cushions to keep you warm
this winter.
The Changeable Cushion
Just as its name implies, the shape of this cushion changes when pressed.
The special material inside the cushion conforms to your body shape,
keeping you toasty warm.
The Memory Cushion
This kind of cushion can function as a mattress or pillow. The special
'memory cotton' inside automatically adjusts the height of the cushion
according to the user's temperature and weight.
The Massage Cushion
A vibrator inside this cushion turns on when the pillow is pressed. It
can help relieve tired backs and necks. It's small and portable, so you
can treat yourself to a massage wherever you go.
The Health cushion
Health cushions, including herbal cushions, spice cushions and
antibacterial cushions, can do your body good. They can regulate the
nervous and blood systems, but it's a good idea to consult your doctor
before buying one.
Cleaning Tips
1) Wash the cushion jacket every six to eight days.
2) Air the cushion in the sun for an hour every few days to kill any
bacteria.

Pnyin - Stricter rules for adoption by foreigners
CITYLIFE / Hip & New
Stricter rules for adoption by foreigners
(chinanews.cn)
Updated: 2006-12-26 09:52
Chinese government has mapped out a new plan to impose stricter criteria
on foreigners who want to adopt Chinese children, such as a stable
marriage, good finance records and sound physical and mental health.
Xing Kaimin, director of the China Center of Adoption Affairs under the
Ministry of Civil Affairs, also specifically confirmed a highly disputed
criterion that applicants should not be overweight.
They must have a Body Mass Index (BMI) -- a measure of body fat based on
height and weight that applies to both adult men and women -- of less
than 40, said the guideline, which go into effect on May 1, Beijing-based
China Daily reported on Monday.
A BMI of 40 means extreme obesity, for example, in a person who is 1.7
meters tall and weighs more than 115 kilograms.
"Obese people are more likely to suffer from diseases and might have a
shorter life expectancy," Xing Kaimin told the daily.
"The priority criteria are meant to protect children's interests and
shorten the waiting time for more qualified applicants," Xing said. "It
does not mean we are prejudiced against less qualified applicants, who
can still apply."
According to the new rules, the applicant couple must be married for at
least two years; and those who were earlier divorced should have been
currently married for at least five years.
Xing said a complete family is essential for adopted children.
The current law allows single foreigners to adopt Chinese children, but
requires the father to be at least 40 years older than the adopted girl.
Another change is that couples must have less than four children and be
in the 30-50 age group, according to Xing. The current law does not
specify the number of children of adopting parents, but they should be at
least 30 years old.
He stressed the guidelines are temporary and might be subjected to
further revisions.
Xing's center, the only institution authorized to deal with foreign
adoptions, has received a soaring number of applications to adopt Chinese
children in recent years.
Prospective adopters now have to wait for 14 to 15 months on average from
the time of their applications till they receive an initial match.
"We want to pick the most qualified so that our children can grow up in
even better conditions," Xing said.
More than 100 licensed adoption agencies in 16 countries have been
informed of the revisions.
More than 50,000 Chinese children are reported to have been adopted by
foreigners in the past 10 years, of which US families make up four in
five. About 8,000 Chinese children were adopted by US families last year.
The figure was 5,000 in 2001.

Learning Chinese - Neighborhood schools opened to expat kids

Neighborhood schools opened to expat kids
(Shanghai Daily)
Updated: 2006-12-11 17:24
The children of expats working in Shanghai will be allowed to enroll in
their neighborhood public schools starting next year.
A new regulation, which will be in place in time for the start of the
school year in September, will give a wider choice to overseas parents
who benefit the city's development, the Shanghai Education Commission
said yesterday.
Previously, overseas children could only attend international schools or
one of 150 selected public schools.
But some expat parents complained the public schools were too far away,
officials said.
"The upcoming regulation is designed to facilitate expat parents who are
working and making a contribution to the city's progression," said an
official surnamed Zhou at the commission's international exchange
division.
Children will still be able to attend one of the 150 selected schools,
but could instead enroll in their residence's catchment-area
kindergarten, primary or high school. There they will be merged in with
Chinese students, rather than attend foreign-only classes, as can happen
at the selected schools.
Zhou said tuition fees for expat children would be slightly higher than
those for their Chinese classmates, who pay about 200 yuan (US$25) a
semester for equipment in kindergarten and primary school and a fee of
1,000 yuan a semester at high school.
Zhou said a detailed fee structure was yet to be approved by the local
price authority.
For the first time, the rules make a distinction between the children of
expats and children who come to the country on their own to study. These
children, who are mainly from Asian countries, will still only be allowed
to study at one of the 150 selected public schools.
Expats who want to send their children to a local school must submit one
parent's work permit or foreign expert certificate, one parent's one-year
or above residence permit in the city, real-estate ownership certificate
or property lease contract.
A letter from the parent's employer is also needed to demonstrate the
relationship between the child and expat, the regulation ruled.
The city's public schools teach about 2,000 foreign students under the
age of 18. The number is less than 10 percent of the amount of university
students from overseas in the city.

In the past, renting books, cars and apartments was popular. While in
recent years, young people started renting pets, pot plants, clothes,
cooking utensils for picnics and even bridesmaids. Some people joke that
fashionable office people wish to rent everything.
Mr. Feng, an agent working for an advertisement company, said that he
enjoyed his new "renting" lifestyle: he hired a cozy apartment near his
work place, and rented books, flowers or pets for enjoyments at weekends.
He said his life had become colorful and interesting after he started
renting almost everything in his life.
Currently more and more things can be rented, while previously it was
incredible. Ms. Tian, accompanied by her newly hired bridesmaid, finished
her wedding ceremony successfully. "Bridesmaids provided by wedding
service agencies are well-trained, and know the whole process of wedding
ceremony very well. My bridesmaid reminded me what had to do during the
ceremony," she said.
However, those who enjoy such "renting" lifestyle are not poor. In fact,
most of them are fashionable young white collars in the 25-40 age bracket.

China's top 10 'Home-made' cartoons revealed

The Top 10 of China's most favorite "home-made"cartoons were announced on
November 6 at the conclusion of the First Summit Forum on the China
Animation Industry's Development and Youth's Healthy Growing. The ten
cartoons include Century Sonny, Tortoise Hanba's Stories, Black Cat
Detective, SkyEye, Lao Mountain Taoist, Nezha Conquers the Dragon King,
Wanderings Of Sanmao, Zhang Ga the Soldier Boy, The Blue Mouse and the
Big-Faced Cat and 3000 Whys of Blue Cat. They were voted on by nearly
300,000 netizens since the poll began on September 21. In total 178
China-produced cartoons were nominated.
The first summit forum was held in Qingdao, Shandong Province from
November 4 to 5, sponsored by the Central Committee of the Communist
Youth League of China, the Information Office of the State Council, the
Ministry of Culture, Ministry of Education, Ministry of Public Security,
Ministry of Science and Technology, Ministry of Information Industry,
General Administration of Press and Publication, the State Administration
of Radio, Film and Television, the State General Administration of Sport,
Care-About-Next-Generation Committee and Qingdao municipal government and
organized by China Youth Association For Network Development.
Several cartoonists from the United States, Japan, South Korea, France
and China's Hong Kong and Taiwan regions, along with youth and cultural
organizations and representatives from animation enterprises attended the
event.
Lu Yongzheng, a member of the Secretariat of the Communist Party of China
Central Committee, stressed at the opening ceremony on November 3 that
people in the industry should present healthy animation productions to
teenagers and asked people to create a healthy cyberspace for Chinese
youth. A joint manifesto on the industry's development and youngsters
growing up in a healthy way was released later. Shadow puppet plays and
cartoon art exhibitions were also held during the two-day event.
Experts who participated in the summit explained that among cartoon
readers 11 percent were under 13, 59 percent between 14 to 17 year-olds
and 30 percent were over 18. They estimated there were 500 million people
who could be identified as cartoon consumers. However, according to the
research, among Chinese youngsters only 11 percent said their favorite
cartoons were "home-made" (including those produced in Hong Kong and
Taiwan), 60 percent were from Japan while 29 percent from the United
States and Europe.
