Modern society advocates unrestrained freedom and audacious
self-expression. Graffiti's bold use of bright colors and undisciplined
scribbling cater to this trend and it is becoming more and more popular.
Nowadays graffiti has gone beyond simply scribbling on walls. Police
officers no longer chase graffiti artists. Instead there appear special
bars for them to enjoy their hobby.
Urban graffiti originated in New York City in the late 1960s when bike
messenger Taki 183 used a marker to write his name wherever he went.
Urban graffiti originated in New York City in the late 1960s when bike
messenger Taki 183 used a marker to write his name wherever he went. He
caught the attention of New York Times. An article was written on him and
he soon became quite famous. Kids all over New York realizing the fame
and notoriety that could be gained from "tagging" their names on subway
cars started to emulate the messenger. From then on graffiti has become
more and more popular with individual artists forming gangs to make
bigger creations and common markers being replaced by colorful spraypaint.
How to become a graffiti artist?
1. First you need a blaze (name), like Sanzo, Run or Jim Slum. Then find
a unique way of designing it. You can change your blaze as your skills
progress.
2. A blaze turns into a tag when it's written on walls. A tag is graffiti
artists' calling card and reveals their graffiti skills.
3. Before writing on walls, practice on paper. These practice runs are
called sketches.
4. When creating a tag, keep calm.
5. A marker can be used to tag slick surfaces, but if it's coarse, you
need spray paint. Montana is an imported brand featuring adequate
pressure, pure colors and a nice smell but is priced at RMB 30 per
bottle. Chinese spray paint is much cheaper at around RMB 10 per bottle.
