"Stompin' at the Savoy" is a jazz classic and the Savoy Jazz Orchestra
from Germany will be stompin' in Pudong on Friday night as they play the
swing music of Benny Goodman.

The air in Shanghai is very jazzy at the moment. Old Paramount Dance Hall
jazz concerts are on the way and there are upcoming master classes by
Western jazz stars.

On Friday night, a big jazz orchestra, the Savoy Dance Orchestra from
Germany, will stage a nostalgic concert at the Shanghai Oriental Arts
Center featuring the classic tune, "As Time Goes By" made famous by
"Casablanca."

"We have received messages from local swing fans who said it was torture
listening to great swing music but not being able to dance," says Lu
Minqi, manager from the organizing company of the performance.
"Therefore, we've arranged first-line seats for them. Our vocalist Robin
Merrill will invite some of them up to the stage to swing during the
concert. I think it will make for great fun in the show."

Founded in 1994 by Merrill and Stefan Warmuth, the Savoy orchestra has
set a goal to be entertaining and ensure the audience has. It is open to
all musical styles - Latin, rock and pop songs done in the swing style,
songs by Sting and van Morrison as well as classics from Benny Goodman,
Louis Prima, Gershwin and more.

With the motto - "The Savoy Dance Orchestra consider themselves the true
heirs of the very first Boygroups" - their show is always a feast for the
eyes and the ears.

The 10-piece orchestra has been hand-picked not just for their excellent
playing but also because they are great showmen. Merrill once said the
aim was to provide the same excitement that was conjured up at Benny
Goodman's Carnegie Hall concerts, or in the Savoy Ballroom in New York.

"It seems they've made the Shanghai repertoire specially for Shanghai
audience, such as 'As Time Goes by,' 'Over the Rainbow,' 'Singing in the
Rain,' 'Cheek to Cheek,' and 'Sing, Sing, Sing'," says Da Lu, a local
jazz music critic. "These pieces happen to be the most popular songs
broadcast on local radio programs."
